Laser FAQ’s

How does laser therapy work?

The Candela G-Max Pro operates on a dual laser system. The first laser – known as the Alexandrite – is used for lighter skin tones. It removes hair by targeting the pigment in the hair follicles, a process called selective photothermolysis. The laser targets melanin (the pigmented area) and destroys the cells around the bulb, bulge and vascular supply of the follicle. The result a long-term reduction in the number of hairs which are able to grow. The second laser – called an Nd:Yag – targets the blood supply rather than the pigment, and is highly-effective on dark skin.

What type of laser do you use?

We use the Candela G-Max Pro, a medical-grade laser widely regarded as the ‘best of the best’ on the global market.

How effective is laser therapy for hair removal?

Laser therapy targets the follicles of the hair and renders them unable to grow back, making the results permanent.

Do I need a laser consultation?

All of our treatment plans are tailored to the individual, so a consultation is essential. The cost is $49, although that fee can be deducted from the cost of your first treatment if you book within two weeks of your consultation.

How long does each treatment take?

Our fully-certified and highly-trained team can complete a treatment session in a matter of minutes.

What preparation is needed before treatment?

Use sunscreen and/or avoid exposure to harsh sun in the weeks leading up to your treatment – sun-burnt (or fake-tanned) skin cannot be treated. Do not epilate or bleach hair within two weeks of treatment, and avoid retinol/vitamin A and other strong active ingredients. A shaving fee will apply if the area to be treated hasn’t been shaved (ideally within 24-hours of treatment).

Do I need to grow my hair?

Very short hair is fine, but ideally there will be something there when we meet for our consultation, so we can see your colour and type of hair growth. However, if you’re having your treatment on the same day as your consultation you will need to shave 24-hours prior to coming in. Between treatments you can shave as often as you like without impacting the results.

What do I need to do post-treatment?

There’s no ‘down-time’ after treatment, so just go about your day. However, you should avoid excessive heat (hot showers, saunas etc) for 24 hours, and apply an SPF 30+ if you’re going to be in direct sunlight. If need be, you can ice the treated area, or apply an unscented, soothing moisturiser. Only shave as a method of epilation, gently exfoliating the treated area two weeks after your session (when hairs are due to fall out).

Can you treat all skin tones?

Most clinics struggle to treat anything other than light skin. But, thanks to the Candela’s dual laser system, we’re able to treat almost all skin tones, and virtually any hair colour.

Can PCOS and hormonal imbalances impact results?

PCOS and/or fluctuating hormone levels can cause regrowth, so more treatment sessions may be required.

Do you have to be qualified to perform laser therapy?

The industry in New Zealand is unregulated. Essentially that means that anyone can purchase a machine, and operate it without any type of qualification or accreditation. Of course, that’s not how we roll at Renaissance. In conjunction with Candela’s own Clinical Consultant, we’ve put our team through the most rigorous training possible. All staff who perform laser treatments are fully-accredited and qualified to the highest standards.
